The thing was that the girl had worn that rubberband for years now. The boy had left it on her bedside table on top of a note that said, “Promise me you won’t let them break you”. But on that day with the boy cat-napping in the warm sand the girl climbed out on the slippery rocks and threw it into the cooling ocean.
On the walk back, the sand stuck to her now wet feet and rubbing her naked wrist, for a moment, she remembered what it felt like to be a child unburdened. She laid heavily on the towel next to the boy purposefully waking him and passed him a note. The boy opened it with trepidation and was surprised to see his own handwriting on the crumpled, worn paper. It read, “Promise
meyou won’tlet thembreakyoume”
